New weather maps are showing a rare weather event will descend on one area of the UK next week.
WXCharts has forecast more wintery weather will hit the UK early on Monday (February 10), bringing with it frozen rain, snow and low temperatures.
Frozen rain, set to hit Liverpool and Cheshire, is a weather event not seen often in the UK. Falling rain strikes a cold surface and freezes almost instantly, producing striking effects as the raindrop spreads before it freezes, encasing it in a layer of clear ice.
The weight of the ice can sometimes be heavy enough to bring down trees and power lines, and the glaze of ice on the ground effectively turns roads and pathways into an ice rink.
Snow will also fall across Scotland (Fort William, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dumfries) as well as England’s east (Alnwick, Newcastle) and west coasts (Carlisle, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Stoke).
Some rain will also sweep across south Wales (Pembroke, Cardiff) and southwest England (St Ives, Plymouth) and pass over Scotland (and England’s west coasts.
The Met Office said of the time frame (February 4 to 13): “Periods of wet weather are likely to affect northwestern parts of the UK at times, particularly early in this period. Some heavy rain is possible and this is likely to be accompanied by spells of strong winds.
“South of this, across the rest of the UK, it is likely to be more settled and whilst some rain can’t be ruled out at times, there is likely to be plenty of dry weather through this period.
“Winds will be lighter and this will bring the risk of overnight frost and fog. Overall, temperatures will be close to normal for most, but it is likely to be mild at times in the northwest. Brief colder spells are likely here in between weather systems though.”
Tonight:
Fine at first with clear periods. However, thickening cloud and rain moving south and east across the UK overnight, giving some hill snow. Patchy frost ahead, and following the rain.
Friday:
Rather cloudy across central, southern and eastern areas with rain and hill snow slowly dying out. Some hill fog. Mostly fine further north and west with bright or sunny spells.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Mostly dry though rather cloudy on Saturday. Turning wet and windy in the northwest. Rain edging southeast and easing on Sunday. Further wind and rain in northwest Monday. Fine elsewhere.
