One of the oldest towns in the UK is also one of its most beautiful. This incredible market village is nestled on the shores of Mount’s Bay in Cornwall and has recently been crowned the best place for a weekend getaway.
The ancient market town of Marazion has it all – beaches, shops, a buzzing hospitality scene and even a magical secluded island. According to consumer research conducted by Sykes Holiday Cottages, Brits picked the coastal gem as their top staycation spot for the season. Marazion received a charter in 1257, and its island, St Michael’s Mount, is claimed to be the island of Ictis, where the Romans used to trade for tin.
The Mount can only be reached on foot at low tide via the cobbled causeway, and high tide ferries will transport you across.
Perched atop this remote island is an ancient abbey that tourists can explore – just make sure you pre-book if you want to wander through the building and its stunning sub-tropical gardens.
The town of Marazion itself has plenty to do too. For the outdoorsy types, there are cycle paths, paddle boarding, beach combing, and of course, swimming – the crystal clear ocean around Marazion is a must-see.
If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, take a walk along the main street that runs parallel to the glistening ocean. Here, you’ll find a range of gift and craft shops alongside galleries and places to eat and drink.
If you like local art, Out of the Blue Gallery has to be on your list. This charming local gallery has art, pottery, driftwood and much more. Make sure you bring your wallet and enough space in your bag to bring all your treasures back home.
For a bit more culture, there’s Marazion Museum which has a fascinating history of this ancient town. Even better, this museum is free to enter which makes it a great rainy day activity.
