UK households warned against using 1 dangerous DIY tool

Many homeowners have turned to carrying out DIY projects as a means to transform their properties to save money. While it is a great way to enhance your home without setting yourself back hundreds or thousands of pounds, Brits are urged to be careful when carrying out specific tasks as well as using certain tools, with experts advising against the use of one in particular.

Cutting-tool experts at Ready Set Supplied have warned homeowners against using a tool other than a power saw without an expert present. They say that homeowners should avoid using it without an expert present because of the severity and frequency of the injuries it can cause.

A Ready Set Supplied spokesperson said: “Power saws are industrial-level equipment. Even minor mistakes can lead to life-changing injuries. Without expert supervision, homeowners risk serious harm.”

Power saws are hazardous for three main reasons: the high-speed blades, where even a slight contact can result in deep cuts or amputations, the kickback that occurs when the blade jumps or hits knots in the wood, and a lack of control, where untrained users often underestimate how quickly things can go wrong.

Recent NHS data has revealed that power saws, particularly circular saws, are the most dangerous tools, causing over 5,600 injuries annually.

As a result, the experts have given three tips to help keep homeowners safe when using the tool.

The first is to always have expert supervision. They said: “If you must use a power saw, ensure an experienced professional is present. Their expertise significantly reduces the likelihood of mistakes that lead to serious injury.”

When using a power saw, there are three items of safety gear that you should never forget. Ensure you have cut-resistant gloves, which are essential to protect your hands, safety goggles for eye protection, and ear defenders to prevent hearing damage from “prolonged exposure to loud machinery.”

The final thing experts suggest is evaluating whether your task can be “safely achieved” by using manual tools instead. Although the job might take longer, it is much safer and provides great control.

The spokesperson said: “Homeowners should never prioritise speed over safety. Choosing safer tools and practices can save you from severe injuries.”
