In a stark warning, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis has raised concerns about China’s actions in relation to Taiwan, urging the UK and the rest of the Western world to take significant measures to prevent China from following in Russia’s footsteps. Over the past four years, Taiwan, a territory claimed by China, has repeatedly voiced complaints about Chinese military activities surrounding the island.
With presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan on the horizon, Chinese President Xi Jinping has escalated missions near Taiwan.
Speaking on GB News, Davis cautioned that the United States might not emerge victorious in a war against China.
He emphasised the need to collaborate with Taiwan and privately communicate that the US cannot commit to fighting for them, given the potential nuclear ramifications of such a conflict.
“We can’t fight a war against China and win,” Davis said. “We just can’t get into a war that could go nuclear; it would be foolish.”
At the same time, Beijing has issued a warning to the Philippines, vowing to intensify military pressure in the South China Sea sovereignty dispute.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed this threat during a phone call with his Philippine counterpart, stating that China would defend its rights and respond resolutely if external forces continued to provoke trouble.
While China claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Brunei, and the Philippines dispute this claim, leading to simmering tensions in the region.
Davis stressed that with global tensions escalating, the risk of World War 3 is uncomfortably high. He acknowledged that while such a scenario is not necessarily likely at any given point, careful and wise management is crucial to avoiding unintended consequences and potential escalation.
He said: “I won’t say that they’re likely in any point, all this can be managed with wise discipline.
“We can absolutely avoid it and have a good year or we can act foolishly and potentially have unintended consequences and things could spiral.”
