UK Government borrowing rose to £20.2 billion last month, marking the highest September figure for five years, the Official for National Statistics said.
This comes after last week it emerged UK Government borrowing costs had dropped. The yield on 10-year gilts plunged by 4 basis points to 4.54%, down from 4.58%, to the lowest level since mid-August.
Next month, Chancellor Rachel Reeves will deliver her Autumn Budget, which many fears may include tax rises.
Last Wednesday, she conceded the Government was “looking at tax and spending” ahead of the much-anticipated Budget.
