UK commuter town train station's car park spaces 'so narrow I had to climb out the boot'

Visitors to a busy railway station have slammed the “narrow” car parking spaces as “absurd”.

Simon Tompkins, who parked at Huntingdon station said the spaces were smaller than any other he has visited in Cambridgeshire.

Simon travelled from Huntingdon to Peterborough with his father and son. He said: “Both of them really struggled to get out of the car.”

“My father’s mobility isn’t what it used to be, but my son is as fit as a fiddle and he also struggled. The fact I had to pull the car forward to let them out, and do the same again to let them in, is absurd.”

“I am aware that cars are getting bigger but I haven’t experienced such narrow parking spaces anywhere else in Cambridgeshire.”

The station has two car parks, one just outside the entrance and another to the south. Another local man, Boris Hurinek, claimed he was fined “for not parking within the allocated spot” after his car wheel touched the line of a parking space at the station.

A woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It has been too narrow for years. I have had to exit via hatchback on occasion.”

However, John Morris, the founder of Hunts Walking and Cycling Group, said the size issue lies with cars rather than car parks.

He hinted that people should consider the size of their vehicle before purchasing, responding to complaints about the tight parking spaces at Huntingdon railway station, he said “something to think about before you fall for the marketing and buy a bigger car?”
