Nearly 4.3million families across the UK are renting their homes, with many finding it difficult to secure suitable housing that aligns with their budget and requirements. Yet with many people still working from home, there is greater flexibility on where you can live compared to pre-Covid days.
Fresh research by property sale firm Housebuyers4u has scrutinised major UK cities to pinpoint those offering the most affordable family accommodation. The research looked into indicators such as average household income, property prices, mortgage costs, council tax rates, and leftover income after housing expenses – and one UK city has taken the number one spot.
The results
Aberdeen clinches the top spot as the best destination for family housing in the UK; this is because families residing in this area retain £12,790 annually after covering living expenses, meaning these households have the most disposable income.
Not only that, Aberdeen boasts notably safe neighbourhoods – well above UK averages – whilst the city centre caters to family-fun activities.
Regeneration
The port city in Scotland is famed for its grey stone buildings, earning Aberdeen the nickname of “the Granite City”, but the area is currently undergoing a significant revamp.
Union Street, a major shopping thoroughfare in Aberdeen, is set to witness numerous changes as part of what has been declared the largest project of its kind in over two centuries.
Moreover, the city’s Union Terrace Garden is set for a rebirth with a £28million regeneration scheme.
What to do and see
Aberdeen’s beach is a popular destination for residents and visitors alike, but there’s no shortage of activities in the surrounding area – whether you fancy an ice cream or a trip to the nearby Codona’s Amusement Park.
Other affordable cities
Other cities that made the cut include Derby, which clinched second place with residents keeping £10,135 annually after covering all housing and living costs. Derby also boasts low crime rates and offers around 40 recreational facilities for children.
Glasgow secured third place in the UK’s family housing rankings, as households keep £6,234 annually after covering all expenses.
Notably, the city offers low median house prices at just £217K and affordable mortgage payments. While housing availability is moderate, those who secure a home can enjoy safe neighbourhoods and access to over 120 children’s amenities.
