The Met Office is predicting climbing temperatures over the festive period as parts of the UK will reach 13C on Wednesday. Areas of northern Scotland, which are usually wintry this time of year, will see double figure temperatures too.
The mild weather means the nation would be hotter than Corfu on Christmas day, with Rome and Istanbul also being colder at 12C.
A Met Office forecaster said: “Christmas Day and Boxing Day look exceptionally mild for the time of year. Scotland could see overnight temperatures 10C above average on Christmas morning.”
They added: “The usual average for this time of year is 7C or 8C so we’ll be around double where we usually are.”
However, last Christmas also saw high temperatures with a record of 15.3C recorded at Heathrow making it one of the hottest Christas Eves to date.
The Met Office five day weather forecast predicts outbreaks of rain and drizzle to accompany the high figures. Christmas Eve will be mostly cloudy yet remains “much milder”. December 25 will also see a large amount of cloud, yet a little more brightness can be expected.
The unusual subtropical air follows a wintry few months with storms and snow sweeping the UK. Parts of the country saw a cold and blustery weekend with 75mph winds in some areas, as yellow weather warnings were put in place.
Warnings remain in place for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as large parts of England.
Yesterday, December 22, saw around 100 flights get cancelled at Heathrow Airport with passengers advised to check their trip before travelling.
A Heathrow spokesperson said: “Due to strong winds and airspace restrictions, a small number of flights have been cancelled today. This will ensure the vast majority of passengers can still travel as planned.
“We know how important travel at this time of year is and have extra colleagues on hand in our terminals to support people on their journeys. We encourage passengers to check with their airline for the latest information about their flight.”
