Edinburgh Airport joins the revolution in UK airport security by axing the 100ml liquid rule, a welcome boost ahead of the summer getaway season.

Hot on the heels of London City Airport, Edinburgh Airport ditches the tedious liquid limitations. New high-tech scanners permit passengers to carry more than 100ml of liquids without having to display them separately during security checks, potentially slashing queue times as travellers no longer need to unpack their lotions and potions. Holidaymakers jetting off from Edinburgh can now wave goodbye to 100ml liquid restrictions and keep their bottles tucked away in their bags. Yet, they must still heed a few remaining regulations.

The airport’s official website has been swiftly updated to clue in holidaygoers on the revamped guidelines: “You can now bring through up to two litres of liquids through security.” It states transparently: “Liquids can stay in your bag – there’s no longer any need to remove these.” It further clarifies: “You can bring multiple containers, as long as the containers are up to two litres.”

It adds: “If you are carrying metallic or double walled containers (including vacuum flasks, thermos flasks and metallic water bottles), please ensure the container is empty prior to the security checkpoint. You can then top up your bottles for free after security. Bear in mind that all gels, pastes, lotions, liquid-solid mixtures (including food) and pressurised containers also count as liquids!”.

British globetrotters have a reason to be cheerful as high-tech scanners are being installed at airports across the UK, reports the Mirror. Although initially set for completion by June 2025, the Department for Transport has now postponed the deadline indefinitely due to supply chain hurdles. This setback means that bigger airports, like Heathrow and Gatwick, couldn’t meet the initial target but have managed to implement some of the scanners in parts of their terminals.

This change might cause a spot of bother for travellers since the familiar 100ml limit on liquids isn’t uniformly enforced throughout all UK airports. Take Gatwick for instance, where the 100ml rule remains, yet passengers can keep their containers packed. Holidaymakers travelling this summer must scrutinise their selected airport’s guidelines to steer clear of any inconvenience or having to gulp down your drinks or toss your toiletries due to inadvertent rule breaches.

And don’t forget to check back on the regulations for your holiday spot when you’re returning home. Key European destinations like Spain, France, and Portugal are still enforcing the 100ml liquid restriction and will ask you to present these items separately during security checks.
