Type 2 diabetes: First thing to eat in the morning to keep blood sugar levels in check

Breakfast is a crucial meal for everyone, including diabetics, because it helps to regulate blood sugar metabolism.

Breakfast breaks your overnight fast, making the first food you have especially important for your supply of glucose which you need in order to make energy.

Therefore, your first meal should go steady on your blood sugar, releasing energy gradually and also providing other essential nutrients.

Fortunately, Abbas Kanani, pharmacist from Chemist Click, recommended three tasty options that could help keep your blood sugar levels in check.

He told Expres.co.uk: “Focus on eating foods which help stabilise insulin and blood sugar such as whole-grain bread and plain Greek yoghurt.

“Eggs are also beneficial for regulating blood sugar levels for people with diabetes because they are high in protein. This not only slows digestion; it also slows glucose absorption.”

With this in mind, the expert recommended whipping up a vegetable omelette or having eggs on a whole-grain toast.

What you include in your breakfast menu is just as important as the things you need to avoid. Kanani said: “It’s best to stay away from sweetened drinks for breakfast. Instead drink herbal teas, unsweetened tea or coffee and water.

“Fruit juices and smoothies are nutritious drinks for breakfast, but diabetics should check whether they contain added sugars before drinking them for breakfast.”

The pharmacist also explained that you should give your body some time after you wake up before breaking your overnight fast.

He added: “The body’s blood sugar levels are naturally high when we wake up and it is generally recommended to eat between one and one and half hours after waking.”
