Two people were shot dead and at least 35 more were injured after a homecoming block party in a Georgia town turned violent in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Over 1,000 people had gathered for a celebration near Pine Street in Vienna, Ga., when a shooter opened fire around 1:25 a.m., according to Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy.

The two victims were men, ages 20 and 23, according to the Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls. Their families and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) have been notified, but their names have not yet been released to the public.

The GBI announced that they will be investigating the shooting alongside local authorities.

“Deputies immediately responded to the area and discovered multiple people had been shot,” said the GBI in a press release.

“Deputies also found two people in the 600 block of Pine Street that were pronounced deceased on scene. Victims were taken to several regional hospitals for treatment.”

Police were already at the scene monitoring the crowd when shots were fired from at least two locations about a block apart, according to the sheriff.

The identity of the shooter and the motive of the crime were unclear Sunday.
