The Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel advice to all the British tourists travelling to Turkey. The country is a popular destination for UK families, thanks to its beautiful scenery and warm climate.
However, travellers should be aware of certain regional and safety risks before heading overseas. Tourists are encouraged to “obey” any warning signs and flags on beaches, as well as following instructions from lifeguards and observe the flag indicators on beaches.
Outdoor activities and adventure tourism in Turkey can pose risks if not properly researched. This includes water sports—so if you are booking through a licensed centre, ensure all paperwork is completed beforehand, request a safety demonstration, and know how to call for help if needed.
Visitors should also pay close attention to warning signs and beach flags, follow lifeguard instructions, and stay aware of flag indicators that signal water conditions.
The Royal Life Saving Society reports that an average of 82 UK citizens drown abroad each year. Holiday environments can be unfamiliar, so it’s important to read safety notices and understand local warning signs and flags.
In case of an emergency, make sure everyone in your group knows who to contact, and if you’re overseas, be aware of the correct emergency number for that country.
The Royal Life Saving Society says: “If you fall into the water or become tired – stay calm, float on your back and call for help. Make sure the whole family knows basic water safety and what to do if they find themselves in the water.”
The Foreign Office also warns that jeep safaris can be dangerous, there were a number of reported accidents in 2023. If you join a jeep safari, use a reputable company who have adequate health and safety procedures and equipment.
