Just like the unpleasant bite of a soggy sandwich so watered down tuna provides a mouthful of unpleasantness. Tuna salads are a popular dish particularly as the sun makes its appearance, being the perfect outdoors light lunch loved by many Brits. But as anyone can attest, when the tuna salad is more on the wet and watery side, it can be less than appetising.

Fortunately, adding only one ingredient which may be on the more unusual and less conventional side of things ensures your tuna salad will not be “watered down”. According to Simply Recipes, this ingredient not only “adds the kick” to your tuna salad that will “wake up” your dish, it also avoids the sogginess of watered tuna salads.

“If you’re a tuna salad sandwich-lover like me, you probably know exactly how you like your tuna salad,” begins the site.

“However you order or make your favorite tuna salad, there is one ingredient I never skip that I’ve found makes a major difference.”

The foodie website further offered the secret and unusual ingredient that works a treat for all tuna salads and is Dijon mustard.

The website added: “Just a little bit does wonders and is most likely something you have at home, or that you can find wherever you’re ordering: Dijon mustard.”

The food site added how the “tangy with a suitable bite” flavouring of Dijon mustard is the perfect added ingredient.

Adding how it “wakes up any tuna salad that risks tasting a little drab, whether it’s overloaded with mayonnaise, watered down, or lacking enough textural excitement”.

As for the best type of mustard to add to your tuna salad, Dijon was the preferred type to stick to.

That’s because Dijon’s “mild vinegary punch” is the kick and taste that works best with the tuna.

Most other types of mustard offer flavours which are either too pronounced or sweet which don’t often work well combined with your tuna salad.

The slight change of colour that Dijon mustard brings is a visual delight in your salad alongside being a tangy winner.
