The US elects its leader through the electoral college system.
Each of the 50 US states and the capital Washington DC have a share of the 538 total votes. The more people in a state, the more electoral college votes that state gets.
To win, Donald Trump and Kamla Harris are aiming for 270 electoral college votes.
In all but two states (Maine and Nebraska) the candidate with the most votes takes all of the electoral college votes in that state.
People vote by mail or in person on polling day.
This system means a candidate can become President even if they don’t win the popular vote, as Mr Trump did in 2016.
