Tropical storm Rachel strengthens ahead of landfall on Pacific Coast

The US faces a tropical triple threat from as storms threaten both coasts.

Along the Pacific, Rachel closes in on Baja California, while a new system, Simon, rapidly intensifies farther south. Simultaneously, the Atlantic coast braces for a Gulf strike.

Rachel is expected to approach northern Baja and the northern Gulf of California at tropical-storm strength this weekend, triggering potential Tropical Storm Watches.

Swells will build along Southern California, bringing life-threatening surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding through early next week.

Rachel’s moisture will also spread inland, threatening the Southwest with flash flooding and high-terrain gusty winds.

Farther south, Simon is expected to become a hurricane Thursday night, aiming at Mexico’s west-central coast as a major hurricane by Saturday.

A Hurricane Warning is active there for catastrophic winds, storm surge, and dangerous mudslides.

While Simon threatens Mexico and Rachel targets Baja, the US faces a multi-front assault.

Adding to the danger, Isaias has strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season overnight as it surged toward the US Gulf Coast today, according to the National Hurricane Center.
