Tributes pour in as King Charles announces cancer diagnosis

Hundreds of tributes to King Charles have poured in within hours of an announcement confirming his cancer diagnosis.

Politicians, journalists, commentators, footballers, and boxers have all posted tributes to the King following his diagnosis with the condition.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson took to X/Twitter to say: “The whole country will be rooting for the King today. Best wishes to Charles III for a full and speedy recovery.”

Former footballer Gary Lineker also took the platform to wish the King best wishes. He wrote: “Really sorry to hear the news that King Charles has cancer. Awful news. Wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

First Minister of Northern Ireland, Michelle O’Neill added: “I am very sorry to hear of King Charles’s illness and I want to wish him well for his treatment and a full and speedy recovery.”

Other current politicians have also issued tributes wishing King Charles a quick recovery from his cancer, which Buckingham Palace have said isn’t prostate cancer.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer wrote: “On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish His Majesty all the very best for his recovery. We look forward to seeing him back to swift full health.”

SNP Leader at Westminster Stephen Flynn added: “Very sorry and concerned to learn of King Charles’ illness. My thoughts are with both him and his loved ones.”

In a statement announcing his diagnosis, Buckingham Palace said: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
