The body of a British holidaymaker has been found in Greece, months after he disappeared while out on a hike. The tragic discovery was made by local hunters on Saturday morning in the remote Epionia area of Kilios, northern Karpathos.
The 55-year-old Brit disappeared on June 27 after heading on a hike along one of Karpathos’s rugged trails. He was last seen on that Friday taking a photo of the scenery by a local witness from Diafani. The British tourist had asked for directions on how to get to Vroukounda, via Lahamitis.
When he failed to return to his accommodation, the owner of the property reported his disappearance to local police. His rental car was later found parked and locked in the Korfasia area of Avlonas, prompting a full-scale search.
Local authorities mobilised a rescue team who used specially trained dogs and drones in an extensive search for his whereabouts. Despite combing the land and coastal area, the search came up blank, with no trace found of the missing tourist.
His body was transferred to Karpathos Hospital and will then be taken to Rhodes where an autopsy will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.His ex-wife along with his son and son-in-law had earlier arrived on the island, and were immediately informed of the discovery of his body, according to local reports.
This is not the first tragedy to befall British tourists in Greece this year, with a spate of deaths occurring throughout the summer.
Earlier in September, a 73-year-old British man was found unresponsive on a sun lounger in Agia Paraskevi, Skiathos.
Other tourists and a lifeguard tried desperately to resuscitate him before a local doctor arrived to help.
Unfortunately the elderly man failed to respond to treatment and was later pronounced dead. Days before, a 68-year-old British man died while swimming off Lindos in Rhodes after appearing to lose consciousness in the water.
