Two boys have tragically been found dead on railway tracks.
Emergency services, including police and paramedics, were summoned to the scene, near Stockport, at approximately 10.10pm on Thursday night (July 3).
The identities of both boys, aged 16, have not been disclosed, but British Transport Police confirmed their families have been notified.
The deaths are not being treated as suspicious, BTP said in a statement on Friday afternoon. Both were sadly declared dead at the scene, near Poynton railway station.
Officers were photographed at the site of the tragedy on Friday morning, alongside Network Rail officials. Floral tributes are being placed at the scene.
A passenger who left a train at the station in Poynton on Friday told the Manchester Evening News that the incident was ‘devastating’.
She said: “It’s just devastating. I have teenage children myself, including a 16-year-old boy. It just brings it so close to home.”
No additional details regarding the circumstances or what police suspect occurred have been disclosed.
Police confirmed the teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene ‘despite the best efforts of paramedics’.
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police stated: “Officers were called at around 10.10pm last night (3 July) to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Poynton railway station.
“Officers attended with paramedics. Very sadly and despite the best efforts of paramedics two 16-year-old boys were both pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
No further details have been disclosed.
