As Bognor Regis marks 65 years since the opening of its Butlin’s holiday camp, the town has found itself at the centre of a heated national debate after it was labelled the “worst” seaside resort in Britain in a new Which? survey. But not everyone agrees.
Despite scoring just 36% in the poll, with dismal ratings for its beach, amenities and value for money, visitors and locals alike came out swinging in defence of the much-maligned town. Among them was Olivia Martin, 27, a first-time visitor who argued that Bognor’s critics were wide of the mark.
“It’s peaceful here and I haven’t seen any street drinkers or homeless people like you do further down the coast in Brighton and Worthing,” she told The Sun, soaking up the sun on the town’s shingle beach.
Her comments echo a common sentiment in Bognor, while the town has its problems, including crime, struggling high streets, and housing challenges, it’s unfairly singled out when other resorts only a short 28 miles away face similar or worse issues.
Long-time resident Malcolm Nisse added: “People are quick to complain, but other places are far more rundown and don’t get the bad press we get.”
The Which? survey compared Bognor unfavourably to destinations like Bamburgh in Northumberland, which topped the poll with 84%.
Bognor’s beach received just two stars out of five, while other key categories such as food, drink, scenery and peace and quiet earned only one star.
Locals blame years of underinvestment and changing holiday habits, with cheap flights abroad gutting the domestic seaside tourism trade.
But many also point to a broader problem with its rising crime, antisocial behaviour, and a growing sense of neglect.
Yet signs of change are on the horizon. Millions are being poured into regeneration projects, from theatre renovations to new hotels and retail improvements.
And Butlin’s remains a key economic driver, hosting thousands of guests each summer.
As Bognor battles to shake off its gloomy reputation, many hope the town’s sunny climate and a new wave of investment will finally give it the glow-up it needs.
