Tottenham fans have been banned from drinking wine and spirits ahead of tonight’s Super Cup showdown with Paris Saint-Germain. The north Londoners are hoping to begin their campaign by lifting another trophy at the expense of the reigning European champions. They will be backed by thousands of supporters who have flown to Italy ahead of the fixture.

Many fans have arrived in Udine over the last few days, with the match taking place at the Bluenergy Stadium. However, some will have been left disappointed by a strange rule in force at pubs and bars across the region. They have been banned from buying anything but beer, with the restriction also applying to PSG supporters.

In one pub, alcoholic spirits such as rum, whisky and vodka had all been taken down from behind the bar, according to The Sun. Fans were also prevented from buying wine, meaning beer was the only alcoholic drink available for purchase.

A note had been taped to the wall opposite the bar, which read: “Say thanks to the UEFA.” Another note emphasised: “It’s not our fault.”

Even locals were hit with the bizarre restriction, with a local police officer quoted as saying: “These are the rules and it is beer only. Even the shops and supermarkets have not been allowed to sell alcohol to residents that live here.”
