Tory MP puts forward new law to strip Harry and Meghan of titles

Legal changes allowing Harry and Meghan to be stripped of their royal titles were put before parliament tonight.

Conservative Bob Seely introduced a bill to stop members of the family who chose a civilian life from keeping the trappings of royalty.

The Isle of Wight MP believes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should become Mr and Mrs now they have renounced royal duties.

He said: “The royal family is part of the institutions of this country and Harry and Meghan shouldn’t be trashing it and wanting to keep their titles.

“You can’t quit the royal family, keep all your titles and spend all your time trying to undermine it.

“If they want to set an example, this is not the way to do it.

“If you want to be private, give up your titles.

“Don’t trash the royal family while enjoying the perks of it.”

Mr Seely presented his Titles Deprivation 1917 Act Amendment Bill in the Commons and it will have its second reading in June, but it is unlikely to make progress due to lack of parliamentary time.

The latest row involving the Sussexes erupted after the publication of Omid Scobie’s tell-all book, Endgame.

Dutch copies of the book were pulled from the shelves in the Netherlands when they were found to have identified the Princess of Wales and the King as having questioned the skin colour of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son.
