The National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville, Alabama, issued an urgent alert at 6:24pm CDT on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, identifying western Madison County and eastern Limestone County as the areas most in danger.
The tornado was confirmed on radar just two minutes prior, at 6:22pm, as it moved near Madison, heading east at 35 mph.
Officials warned: “You are in a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. TAKE COVER NOW!” and reported a “deadly tornado” currently on the ground.
“You are in a life-threatening situation. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter.
“Mobile homes will be destroyed. Considerable damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles is likely and complete destruction is possible,” the alert announced, according to the Mirror, reports the Mirror.
It has been sighted over the University of Alabama where the Emergency Alert System (EAS) national warning has been activated by the NWS:.
“EAS activation has been requested after Particularly Dangerous Situation was declared for tornado over University of Alabama in Huntsville, AL.
“A Tornado Emergency has been issued for western Madison County and eastern Limestone County in Alabama. A Take shelter now warning has been issued as confirmed tornado approaches in Madison and Huntsville with a large tornado now on the ground in Huntsville.
“Passengers are now taking refuge on a train, with movement halted, due to tornado near Huntsville. A tornado is also reportedly on the ground near South of Tanner.”
The tornado warning will persist until 6:45pm CDT, with the severe weather predicted to impact multiple locations imminently.
“Madison and Huntsville by 6:30pm,” revealed the report.
“University of Alabama in Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal by 6:35pm, and.
“Alabama A and M University by 6:45pm.”
The potentially devastating storm is also expected to affect Belle Mina, French Mill, Mooresville, Capshaw, Ryland, Hampton Cove, Ripley, Brownsboro, and Farley.
Local authorities are calling for immediate and urgent action from residents in its path.
“To protect your life, TAKE COVER NOW!” warned the National Weather Service.
Inhabitants should seek refuge, preferably on the lowest floor of a robust structure, away from windows. Those in mobile homes, vehicles or outdoors are advised to find sturdy shelter immediately.
Emergency services are preparing for possible extensive damage as the tornado moves through these populated areas.
