A classic noughties film is available to watch for free for Prime Video subscription holders and fans have hailed it “brilliant from start to finish”.

The film was adapted from a play and it was released in 2000, receiving positive reviews, and it went on to win three BAFTAs.

The story was also adapted for the West End stage following the film’s success and it continues to bring viewers to tears.

Billy Elliot, the film in question, stars Jamie Bell in the title role and it follows a working-class boy who has a passion for ballet.

His father, a miner and widower, objects based on negative stereotypes of male dancers and Billy is left torn between his family and his dreams.

Fans have taken to IMDb to share their thoughts, with carlybotley sharing: “Top ten movie.

“One of my all time favourite movies, I cry every time. Really brings home the struggles of the time up north. Brilliant from start to finish.”

TheLittleSongbird hailed it “beautiful, honest, touching, poignant- a truly remarkable film”.

Hitchcockthelegend described it as a “masterful coming of age drama without sugar and soap”.

Harrietgate called it “unforgettable”, adding: “Does anyone else weep unashamedly at the climactic leap of Swan Lake at the end?

“Watching this in North America makes me homesick for the high standard of British films, including magnificent editing.

“What a lovely change from a lot of the overhyped violent/offensive rubbish and other drivel that is foisted on us.”

Jamie Bell became the youngest winner of Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 54th British Academy Film Awards following its release.

Around 2,000 boys were considered for the role before Bell was chosen.
