As the welcome new season begins, the UK really comes into its own with landscapes adorned with vibrant floral displays. From delicate snowdrops to golden daffodils and tulips, the nation’s gardens and woodlands have so much to offer.
Here, Elise Harlock, a floral expert at Prestige Flowers, has shared her favourite places to see this year’s most breathtaking spring flower displays.
Painswick Rococo Garden, Gloucestershire
“Painswick Rococo Garden is a must-visit,” says Elise. “With over five million snowdrops, it really captures the essence of early spring.
“But what many don’t realise is that as the season progresses, the garden also boasts an impressive display of crocuses, adding purples and yellows to the landscape. It’s a fantastic spot to see the transition from winter to spring.”
Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire
Anglesey Abbey has an impressive collection of over 400 snowdrop varieties.
“The estate’s Winter Garden is particularly enchanting,” says Elise. “It’s a very relaxing space with thoughtfully designed landscapes, showcasing the stunning spring blooms beautifully.”
Keukenhof Gardens at Hever Castle, Kent
Hever Castle’s annual tulip festival is a must-see, says Elise.
“Tulips are one of the most iconic spring flowers and Hever Castle is up there with the best of the best. It brings a slice of the Netherlands to Kent with thousands of vibrant tulips, hyacinths, and narcissi in full bloom. It’s spectacular!”
Blickling Estate, Norfolk
“Bluebell season is one of the UK’s most magical floral spectacles,” says Elise.
“The Blickling Estate’s ancient woodlands turn into a sea of blue every April, creating an enchanting and almost dreamlike setting – this really is one for the Instagram pages!”
Cambo Gardens, Fife
For those in Scotland, Elise recommends Cambo Gardens.
“Set by the sea, Cambo offers a huge snowdrop collection with over 200 varieties on display,” she says. “It’s a must-see destination for snowdrop admirers with a beautiful coastal backdrop, which is truly the icing on the cake.”
Bodnant Garden, Wales
For those who love larger blossoms, Bodnant Garden in North Wales is the place to go.
“The magnolias and camellias at Bodnant Garden are breathtaking in early spring,” says Elise. “The towering magnolia trees covered in pink and white blossoms are truly breathtaking.”
Chelsea Physic Garden, London
In the heart of London is the Chelsea Physic Garden.
“Their annual snowdrop festival, known as the ‘Heralding of Spring,’ showcases dozens of varieties and is the perfect retreat away from the city life for flower enthusiasts,” explains Elise.
Forde Abbey, Dorset
“Set within a former Cistercian monastery, Forde Abbey’s 30-acre garden comes alive with thousands of snowdrops during February,” Elise says.
“The combination of historic architecture and blooming gardens offers a serene spring experience.”
Castle Howard
In the heart of Yorkshire, Castle Howard’s gardens are a treat throughout the seasons.
“Spring brings beautiful rhododendrons and blue bells in the ornamental Ray Wood,” Elise explains.
“The Estate is also famous for its stunning daffodil display.”
