At 78 years old, Glenn Close has had a long career spanning across countless classic films, which sparks an interesting debate – which film of hers is the best?

Having starred in a television series alongside Kim Kardashian in her most recent role in Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair, it’s hard to deny just how much range Close has as an actor. Making her theatre debut in 1974 as a mere 27-year-old, her career has come a long way, taking her to be nominated for an Oscar after her first-ever film feature.

Now firmly cemented amongst the Hollywood legends, Time Magazine named her one of the most influential people in the world, and her successful catalogue is all to thank.

From Disney films to rom-coms and more, there’s something for everyone to love when it comes to Glenn Close’s film selection.

So before Close appears in All’s Fair this week, here is our list of her five most iconic roles ranked by IMDb Score – and you may be surprised to learn fans’ number one pick is not what she is most famous for.

5. The Paper (1994)

Of our top five Glenn Close performances The Paper comes in fifth place with a 6.7 rating on IMDb.

Released in 1994 and directed by Ron Howard, the film delves into a mad 24 hours in the life of a newspaper editor, from the professional chaos to the personal woes.

4. Fatal Attraction (1987)

Following closely behind at number four is the fan-favourite film, Fatal Attraction, with a 6.9 IMDb score.

The 1987 psychological thriller follows Dan Gallagher, played by Michael Douglas, and Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close, in their twisted and sneaky love affair.

He is a married man that decides to cheat on his wife with his work colleague, but what started as a bit of fun quickly becomes a dangerous game.

When Dan makes the decision to call it quits and end the affair with his mistress, Alex takes things up a notch and begins stalking him and his family. Her deep emotions drive her to do all kinds of crazy things, which eventually land Dan’s wife in a hospital bed.

3. The Big Chill (1983)

The third film may come as a surprise to some, standing as the 1983 film, The Big Chill, in which Glenn Close plays a doctor, amongst an ensemble cast. While at the time of its release, the critical response was relatively lukewarm it became a bit of a classic, which continues to wow fans today with a score of 7.1

The synopsis reads: “A group of seven former college friends gather for a weekend reunion at a South Carolina vacation home after the funeral of another of their college friends.”

A viewer took to Rotten Tomatoes to say: “This is truly one of my all-time favourites! Some incredibly funny scenes are mixed with drama that comes from incredible writing and even better acting! Not to mention the soundtrack should be put in the books as one of the best ever!”

2. The Wife (2017)

Coming in at number two in Glenn Close’s impressive catalogue is a more recent addition to her career, the 2017 movie, The Wife. This powerful role sees her character stand in the shadow of her incredibly successful husband, as he details their life and marriage in a book for the world to see.

A Rotten Tomatoes review claims that the film, ranked at 7.2 on IMDb, is a “brilliant movie”.

They write: “Close portrays the caring wife, however knowing it’s all a great big lie. I could watch this woman play in anything; she is just wonderful. Not forgetting the rest of the cast, who were equally as good.”

1. Dangerous Liaisons (1988)

Taking the number one spot was Dangerous Liaisons, a 1988 classic that follows an aristocrat, the Marquise de Merteuil, played by Close.

She is determined to seek revenge on her ex in a vicious plan to disgrace his new lover. Equally bored with not much better to do, she seeks help from Sebastian Valmont, who acts as her deviant and helps to plot her evil plan.

As he tries to seduce the fiance, played by none other than Michelle Pfeiffer, he aims to have proof of their encounters to show as evidence of her disloyalty and ultimately ruin their relationship.

Although, as their lies become more tangled, the complications cause chaos and put an end to their conniving game.

Fans have given the film a score of 7.5, with one writing on IMDb: “Easily, the best adaptation of book to film. Witty, daring, opulent and compelling. Visually stunning; and shining performances. Read the book, for sure. But film-going doesn’t get much better.

All’s Fair is coming to Disney Plus tomorrow, November 4.
