Tom Cruise 'overwhelmed' by Top Gun honour from US Navy after incredible achievement

Top Gun is a blockbuster classic, but the sequel was even more of a success – and not just at the box office.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick, which was four decades in the making, made a whopping $1.496 billion – the biggest haul of the star’s career to date.

Not only was the film critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated, but it has had an incredible impact in real life, just as its predecessor did.

The popularity of both movies has seen the US Navy’s recruitment numbers “significantly increase” following Cruise’s role as pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell training new recruits. Some US theatres even have sign-ups outside.

As a result, the real-life American maritime force has awarded the Hollywood actor their top civil honour for his “outstanding contributions” to the service.

US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro presented Cruise with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award at Longcross South Studios in Runnymede, Surrey today.

Speaking to a mixed audience of those in the movie business and US Navy, Del Toro said the star had spent almost four decades “as an unwavering supporter of the men, women and families of the navy marine corps. His dedicated support to sailors, marines and civilians through his efforts in the film industry increased public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”

On Top Gun Maverick, the US Navy Secretary added that the film “brought nostalgia to older audiences and reinvigorated the minds of newer audience members, which effectively targeted a younger audience’s interest into the skill sets and opportunities the navy can provide.”

Upon receiving the award, Cruise said: “In life, something that is very true to me is, to lead is to serve. I know that to my core and I see that in the servicemen and women. I appreciate everyone’s dedication and it’s a true honour to represent them.”

The 62-year-old added that he was “proud and overwhelmed” to be given this “extraordinary acknowledgement.”

It should come as little surprise that Top Gun 3 is very much in the works.
