The temperatures are dropping, which means many of us are craving warming and comforting food, and nothing hits the spot during the autumn and winter months much like soup. As much as many people may like to make their own, there are some people out there who crave ease and speed when it comes to food.
Perhaps this is why so many people always have tinned soup at home but, when you eat it, it doesn’t have to taste the same every single time. That’s because adding one ingredient to your soup could help to take it to the next level, and what it is may take you by surprise.
So, if you want to elevate your soup, you may want to pay attention, as this simple recipe tweak is pretty impressive. Meanwhile, if you fancy whipping up your own, there’s also a simple four ingredient recipe you can try.
Katie Leonard shared a simple way to do this on TikTok, and it’s pretty easy to pull off. She simply takes a tin of tomato soup and adds a few things to it in a bid to enhance its taste.
The content creator spends her time taking tinned food from the cupboard and she attempts to make it “more delicious.” Her top tips are super handy for people who want an easy time in the kitchen.
In the clip, Katie said: “Today we are focusing on a tin of tomato soup. Tomato soup is already a classic. It’s warm, rich and comforting.
“But, for tins made tasty, it’s all about adding a little twist. A splash of cream, a herby kick or a cheesy topping can take it to the next level.
“Heat the soup in a pan, and stir in the vodka, and let it cook for two minutes. Add your cream and oregano and mix well to combine. Then stir in your Parmesan.”
According to Katie, a splash of booze really helps to take the soup to the next level, while the cream works to enhance its creamy texture. Herbs are also great for an extra punch of flavour.
Per tin of soup, Katie uses a tablespoon of vodka and three tablespoons of double cream. She adds half a teaspoon of oregano, and sprinkles the cheese to her liking.
Why vodka enhances tomato soup
Little you may know, vodka enhances the flavour of tomatoes. This is because it works to pull out and concentrate their inherent sweetness.
Not to mention, the hint of booze adds a subtle bite of its own. This really aids in creating the perfect contrast for the sweet sauce.
This is why the tipple is a popular choice to add to tomato-based dishes. If you’re looking for a booze-free recipe, you could just leave it out though.
Adding chopped fresh herbs, such as basil or parsley at the end of cooking, can also help to enhance the tomato flavour. Your pantry may be able to aid you too.
Anything like cracked black pepper, Italian seasoning or oregano will make a big difference to your soup. Stirring your favoured herb in while the soup is still cooking is a good way to go.
