We all need our veg, but at times it can be a faff to cook. Luckily, this simple recipe has it all: flavour, aroma, a sweet glaze, it counts as one of your five-a-day and it’s cheap and super quick. It turns out really tasty with a can of green beans, but you can also use fresh ones or frozen ones if you prefer, either way, it’s a dinner side dish sorted.

The cooking hack was shared by the Key To My Lime recipe blog, who described the dish as ‘this quick and easy canned green beans recipe is the best’ assuring that it will ‘quickly become a family favourite’. The recipe poster explained that it’s ‘cooked with onions, garlic, and a deliciously sweet and tangy glaze’ exclaiming that this ‘really is the best canned green beans recipe – and you’ll want to ‘eat them by the spoonful’. The amounts needed for the dish can also be doubled if you’re entertaining a crowd with the original blogger saying ‘I frequently get people asking for seconds’.

The blogger on Key To My Lime wrote: “You can literally eat them by the spoonful standing over the stove.

“They have so much flavour from the sauteed garlic and onion, and then it’s coated in a delicious, sweet, tangy, and ever so slightly smoky glaze made from apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and smoked paprika.”

“This recipe for canned green beans is definitely one that I’d think about doubling or even tripling, especially if you’re serving a crowd.”

The recipe is described as easy to make and easy to snack on being perfect for a week night dinner or even a healthy lunch, but also being a hit at special occasions.

A neighbour of the recipe poster reportedly said she ‘could eat it with every meal’ and that they were some of the ‘best green beans she’d ever had’ – and she couldn’t believe they’d come out of a tin.

Here’s what you’ll need, detailed by Key To My Lime blog:

Green beans – the recipe creator explained that ‘using canned green beans saves so much time and effort’, as well as being a ‘great way to get a vegetable side dish on the table quickly’.

Olive oil: This will be used to saute the onion and garlic in, but you can also ‘swap it for butter if you’d like a richer taste’.

Onion and garlic: These will add depth and flavour to the beans – and make it super tasty.

Apple cider vinegar: The blogger explained: “This adds the acidic element to the sweet and tangy glaze.”

Brown sugar: This helps to balance the tang of the vinegar.

Smoked paprika: “This adds in a slightly smoky flavor, which really rounds out the sweet and savory flavors in this dish”, the Key To My Lime blog explained.

Salt and pepper: The salt will enhance overall flavour, while the pepper adds a bit of spice.

Prep time is just 5 minutes, Cook time 16 minutes, so it really is a snappy side dish ready to serve in no time.

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons olive oil

1 medium yellow onion (diced)

2 cloves garlic (minced)

2 (14.5 ounce) cans cut green beans (drained)

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

3 Tablespoons light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions (from the Key To My Lime blog)

1 Heat a large skillet over medium heat.

2 Once hot, add the olive oil and swirl to coat the bottom of the pan.

3 Add the onion and sauté it until it becomes translucent and slightly browned (about 5 minutes), then add the garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 1 minute).

4 Add the drained green beans, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and smoked paprika to the skillet with the onions and garlic.

5 Stir everything together to combine, making sure the beans are well coated with the seasonings.

6 Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, the vinegar and sugar will reduce into a delicious sweet and tangy glaze.

7 Season with salt and pepper to taste, then let the beans rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to fully meld together.
