Three people were detained Thursday after cops raided a California home in connected with a deadly beach shooting that left two boys, aged 13 and 15, dead.
Monterey County sheriff’s investigators probed a home in the 900 block of Maple Street in Greenfield, about 50 miles southeast of Moss Landing State Beach, where they detained the three individuals and processed evidence.
The raid marks a significant development in the investigation into Monday’s Moss Landing State Beach shooting that killed Marco Antonio Perez, 15, and Nathaniel Flores, 13, both of Salinas, and left two others injured.
“These are persons of interest,” Monterey County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Andres Rosas told KSBW. “At this time, the detectives are speaking to those individuals to try to determine what exactly happened on the morning of November 2nd.”
The identities of the three detained people are unknown. None of the three have been arrested.
Monterey County sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of gunfire near Jetty Road shortly before 2 a.m. Monday found the two teens dead at the scene.
Two other people were hospitalized, including one with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not disclosed the condition of the other victim.
Investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the shooting, but previously said there was “no active threat to the Moss Landing community at this time.”
Trash, alcohol, red cups, and a speaker could be seen at the scene, suggesting a party took place.
Top Monterey County law enforcement officials said then that they were working the case and asking for help on the circumstances.
“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of two lives,” Monterey County Sheriff Tina M. Nieto said, according to KTVU. “Our detectives are working to establish the circumstances surrounding what occurred. We ask anyone who may have information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist with this investigation.”
The families of the two victims — Perez and Flores — launched fundraisers as they grieved the young teen boys.
Perez’s family said they are enduring “immense pain” as he “tragically and unjustly lost his life.”
Flores played for the Steinbeck Tigers Youth Football team, which said he would have turned 14 soon after the shooting.
“It is with profound sadness that the Steinbeck Tigers Youth Football & Cheer organization mourns the heartbreaking loss of one of our own, Nathaniel ‘Nate’ Flores,” read a description on a GoFundMe campaign launched by the organization.
“His unexpected passing has left his family, teammates, coaches, and our entire Steinbeck community heartbroken.”
Rosas added that it is an “ongoing active investigation.”
“Our detectives have not stopped working on this case,” he said.
