Three common interior ‘mistakes’ which are ‘significantly’ increasing your heating bills

1. You don’t have rugs in high-traffic areas

Brian Dillon, interior expert at Crafted Beds, said: “One common interior mistake that can significantly impact heating bills is neglecting the use of rugs.

“Rugs, even thin ones that don’t cost a fortune, can act as insulators which trap heat and prevent it from escaping through bare floors.

“Try placing rugs in high-traffic areas and rooms with hard flooring to really feel the benefit.”

This will help effectively retain warmth and reduce the need for heating, saving on energy bills.

What’s more, adding rugs to the home can help to make the home look cosier.

2. Using blinds instead of curtains

Opting for blinds over curtains may seem like a good idea in terms of saving space, but it can impact heating expenses, according to the pro.

Unlike curtains, blinds offer minimal insulation, especially if households don’t have good-quality ones.

The expert added: “As a result, your indoor temperatures will fluctuate more rapidly, prompting increased reliance on heating to help you stay warm and cosy.

“For the best effect, try using thermal curtains or drapes as they provide the best additional insulation and enhance energy efficiency.”

When the sun is out, open the curtains fully to allow the sun to radiate into the home, helping to keep it heated.

When the sun goes down, close the curtains to retain the warmth which has gathered throughout the day.

The expert also recommended investing in thermal curtains as they work the best to keep heat in as well as to keep light out.

3. You have furniture pushed up to radiators

The expert continued: “Pushing furniture up against radiators is a costly oversight in interior design.

“This arrangement can obstruct heat circulation, causing inefficiencies in heating systems and leading to higher energy consumption.

“Whilst you’ll still be able to feel the benefit somewhat, you’ll feel even warmer if you allow the warm air to flow freely throughout the room.”
