Three individuals have been arrested by Greater Manchester Police following an incident at the Salford City vs Oldham Athletic match on Saturday. The League Two game was brought to a halt when two pitch invaders, clad in white hoodies bearing the message ‘Gary Neville is a Traitor’, stormed onto the field waving England flags.

Security swiftly removed the intruders from the pitch, allowing the match to resume. Neville, a co-owner of Salford, previously spearheaded a significant takeover of the club as part of a consortium that includes David Beckham. Far-right group Britain First have claimed that they were behind the incident on social media.

Neville, also a former Manchester United player and current Sky Sports pundit, previously caused outrage by claiming that “angry middle-aged white men” were responsible for fuelling divisions in the UK. He accused them of using the national flag in a “negative fashion”.

He said: “I love my country, I love Manchester, I love England, but I’ve been building in this city for 15, 20 years and nobody has put a Union Jack flag up, so why do you need to put one up now?

“Quite clearly, it’s sending a message to everybody that there’s something you don’t like. I just kept thinking as I was driving home that we’re all being turned on each other.

“And the division that’s being created is absolutely disgusting, mainly created by angry, middle-aged white men who know exactly what they’re doing.”
