Thomas Tuchel could name surprise player in England squad after ‘sending scouts’ | Football | Sport

Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could receive a shock England call-up from Thomas Tuchel next month, according to reports. Rushworth joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brighton in the summer and is currently enjoying a remarkable run with the club. His displays between the sticks have helped Frank Lampard’s side to an unbeaten start that sees them perched atop the Championship.

Whilst their attack has been prolific at one end, scoring an impressive 34 goals in the opening 12 games, Rushworth has been instrumental at the other end. He has kept six clean sheets and recently set a new club record of going 613 minutes without conceding a goal.

Rushworth, who has represented England at youth level from under-19s up to under-21s, could be on the brink of senior recognition, according to talkSPORT.

Tuchel’s scouts have been closely monitoring his progress and he is reportedly on their radar ahead of matches against Serbia and Albania in November.

Those game will carry little significance with England having already secured qualification for next summer’s World Cup.

England’s most recent squad saw Jordan Pickford backed by Dean Henderson and James Trafford.

Pickford has been the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for years, maintaining his status when Tuchel took over from Gareth Southgate as manager.

Trafford seems to be the most at risk of the three goalkeepers, having left Burnley for Manchester City in the summer and sacrificed regular first-team football.

He returned to his old club for a hefty £31million transfer fee, only to watch as Gianluigi Donnarumma was brought in from Paris Saint-Germain later in the same window.

Rushworth was singled out for special praise by Coventry boss Frank Lampard following their recent win over Watford.

Carl Rushworth made some great saves for us.,” said Lampard. “That is what he is there for and it is great to see a continuation of his form.

“We did a lot of damage in the first half but they are a counter-attacking team. We had to be a bit careful in how we played but we had to take the sting out of the game.”
