In a continent as diverse as Europe, home to hundreds of vibrant cities, some stand out for their exceptional hospitality. Condé Nast Traveller’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards, one of the most prestigious surveys in the travel industry, reveals which destinations truly make visitors feel at home. This year’s ranking, voted on by thousands of readers, highlights the cities that are not only beautiful but also home to the friendliest people.
While you might assume that large, bustling cities are inherently less friendly, this is often a misconception. British cities, in particular, have a surprisingly warm reputation. London, a global metropolis often perceived as cold and impersonal, was ranked the second friendliest city in the UK in Condé Nast Traveller’s 2024 awards, scoring a remarkable 93 out of 100, just behind Glasgow. This year, you won’t find any UK cities in the top 10, but two from tourist hotspot Portugal.
9. Madrid, Spain
Madrid’s friendliness is often described as urban and lively. The people, known as Madrileños, are “welcoming and open”, according to Expatra. While the city is large and fast-paced, its vibrant culture and laid-back work-life balance are major draws for both residents and tourists. The city’s residents are also known to be very friendly in social settings, such as bars and cafes, making it easy for tourists to immerse themselves in the local scene and feel at home.
