Sam Bankman-Fried, once hailed as the golden boy of cryptocurrency, now holds a much darker title of the “world’s richest” prisoner.

The disgraced crypto mogul, who was worth an astonishing £21.6 billion at the height of his success, is serving a 25-year prison sentence after orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in history.

Bankman-Fried’s rise to fame was as meteoric as his fall.

Born to two Stanford law professors, he studied physics at MIT before pivoting to crypto trading in 2017.

In 2019, he launched FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange that quickly became one of the most prominent platforms for buying and selling crypto derivatives.

At its peak in early 2022, FTX and its U.S. operations were valued at a combined $40 billion.

Bankman-Fried’s wealth, which peaked at an estimated $26.5 billion (£21.6 billion), was largely tied to his ownership of about half of FTX and a significant stake in its FTT tokens.

Dubbed the “modern J.P. Morgan,” he was celebrated for stepping in to rescue troubled crypto firms during market downturns.

The facade of success began to crumble in November 2022.

A report by Coindesk exposed significant financial instability within Bankman-Fried’s companies, triggering a crisis of confidence among FTX users. A swift and massive withdrawal of funds followed, leading to a liquidity crunch.

Within days, FTX, its U.S. operations, and its sister trading firm Alameda Research filed for bankruptcy.

Bankman-Fried’s personal fortune evaporated almost overnight.

Once ranked among the richest people in the world, he was left with nothing as his assets and businesses collapsed.

Authorities moved quickly to hold him accountable.

He was arrested in the Bahamas in December 2022, where FTX executives and parts of the company were based. In court proceedings, prosecutors detailed how Bankman-Fried misused customer funds to cover losses at Alameda Research, fund lavish personal expenses, and make political donations.

In addition to his 25-year prison sentence, Bankman-Fried was ordered to forfeit $11 billion in assets.

His stunning fall from grace continued after Forbes estimates his current net worth to be $0.
