The world’s best island for ‘cheap luxury’ – beaches and clear water | Travel News | Travel

If you are dreaming of a paradise sun-kissed tropical island this summer you are not alone. There has been a huge rise in global interest for some island escapism.

Perhaps you fancy a luxury villa in the Caribbean or a five star hotel on a Greek island? However these island getaways can come with a hefty price tag. Now the global online travel company Expedia has released its’ first ever ‘island hot list’. The results are ‘based on verified data and traveller insights’, according to the travel giant.

But which island has been named the best for affordable luxury? Step forward Koh Samui, a tropical island in southern Thailand, was named best for affordable luxury.

Expedia said it has seen a 55 per cent jump in people searching for the island – which they’ve dubbed the ‘wellness island of the east’ – year-on-year, attracting visitors for yoga retreats, detox programmes and ‘beachside spirituality’.

At the same time, it maintains its reputation for nightlife and natural beauty.

Narin Tijayang, former executive director of Koh Samui Office, Tourism Authority of Thailand, said that being selected was a ‘testament to the breathtaking beauty and vibrant culture of our island’.

Travellers to Koh Samui can find luxurious resorts with stunning ocean views, private pools, and world-class spas without breaking the bank.

Time Out says: “Koh Samui, one of the best-known picture-postcard destinations among many that Thailand has to offer, is the country’s third-largest island and a lush playground for those seeking palm-fringed beaches, vibrant culture and mouth-watering cuisine.

“Many of its gem-like resorts and hotels could be straight out of an episode of White Lotus and whether you’re on honeymoon, a family vacation, taking a culinary adventure, or simply after a quiet staycation, it is bound to have something for you.”

It recommends the Four Seasons Resort if you want to push the boat out. It says: “No matter if you are seeking a romantic escape with your cherished other or an epic getaway with your whole tribe, this tropical paradise on the northwestern shore of Koh Samui has it all. You’ll be spoilt for choice with 13 ocean-facing villas, some large enough to accommodate up to 12 guests. Interiors are chic, sunlit spaces with island-inspired touches that epitomise Koh Samui’s tropical soul. And if lounging poolside ever loses its charm (unlikely), there are options aplenty for physical fun: snorkelling and diving at Sail Rock, tennis and Muay Thai lessons, and rounds of golf are just some of the many activities available.”

The island also has plenty of cool villas to rent, luxury boutique hotels and seafront suites at a fraction of the price you would spend in other parts of the world.

But Koh Samui did lose out to another island when it came to sunshine in the Expedia hot list. The Dutch island of Aruba in the Caribbean was ranked top for year-round sunshine.

The arid landscapes of Aruba, home to biking trails and eco-friendly stays, come first for those looking to top up their tan.

It ‘blends outdoor adventure with relaxed Caribbean vibes’, says Expedia.

Bali was named best island for relaxation and like Aruba,  the Indonesian island has seen a 15 per cent growth in search interest.

Food lovers should book a break to Sardinia, which has seen a boom in agritourism and immersive experiences – including plenty of opportunities to eat like a local.

The ‘Blue Zone’, known for its high concentration of centenarians and healthy lifestyle, continues to draw wellness seekers, as does its rugged coastline and hilltop villages.

Partyseekers are being advised to put Paros on their go-to list. While eternal favourites Santorini and Mykonos remain popular, Paros is emerging as the Cycladic gem to watch.

The Expedia Island Hot List was created by analysing a number of factors, including the firm’s travel data, accommodation rates and quality (based on real traveller reviews), weather, cost and accessibility.

The research showed a soaring interest in islands for Brits. At the top of the list are Jersey (+75 per cent), Crete, Greece (+50 per cent), Mauritius (+50 per cent), Malta (+55 per cent), and Madeira, Portugal (+65 per cent).

Melanie Fish, spokesperson for Expedia Group brands said: “‘Powered by real traveller data, the Expedia Island Hot List gives travellers the inspiration they need to plan a smarter island escape.

“Island adventurers want standout stays, affordable prices and seamless flight access. To get that, our top tips are to travel out of season when average stay prices can fluctuate by as much as 50 per cent and bundle flights and hotels together, where you can knock nearly £160 on average off your trip.”
