The M25 has been called one of the UK’s worst motorways by four in 10 drivers. Millions of drivers chose the M25 as the UK’s most hated in a poll of AA members. A huge 40% of respondents agreed it is the most problematic route, reports GB News.
It is the UK’s busiest motorway, with a reputation among British drivers. Those who took part in the poll said it has a “poor surface” and “ very noisy” conditions – they said the 117-mile road has numerous issues.
A driver said: “I have been horrified by aggressive drivers changing several lanes impulsively, at speed, without indicating.
“It feels as if the national speed limit has been abandoned there. 80mph is not only acceptable but essential and average.”
The M25 is a key part of London’s transport network but despite this it has been cited as one of the UK’s least favourite.
Jack Cousens, AA head of roads policy, said: “The M25 is notorious for its heavy traffic and frequent delays.
“As one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country, it is no surprise that drivers find it frustrating. Little wonder Chris Rea declared it the ‘Road To Hell’.”
In second place was the M6 which 21% of respondents voted as the worst motorway. The M1 took third place with 13% of respondents saying it is the worst.
Nine of the top 10 worst motorways feature smart motorway sections which have been controversial. Smart motorways use traffic management methods to increase capacity and reduce congestion.
These methods include variable speed limits, hard shoulder running, and ramp metering at busy times. There are three types of smart motorways: controlled, dynamic hard shoulder, and all-lane running.
One driver said: “Any smart motorway scares me. I count the miles until the end and heave a sigh of relief.
Not only this but roadworks were another reason why some drivers voted certain motorways as the worst.
