When the Prince and Princess of Wales aren’t living in their Kensington Palace apartment in central London, they often go out enjoying a quieter life in some of the UK’s quaint and picturesque towns and villages. After Queen Elizabeth’s incredible wedding gift of a Georgian mansion on the Sandringham Estate, the couple often spend their time exploring Norfolk.
One quaint town, previously crowned the UK’s most beautiful, is known to be a particular favourite, with the future King and Queen often popping into the local shops and boutiques for a browse and a bite to eat. Nestled in the heart of North Norfolk lies the postcard-perfect Georgina market town of Holt.
Despite being unknown to many, the historic charm of its weaving streets and yards was enough to catch some royal attention. Its streets are lined with historic red brick townhouses with hidden courtyards and a thriving scene of independent shops calling it home.
It is best known for its attractive historic architecture. After a fire destroyed many of its medieval buildings, Holt was almost completely rebuilt with a matching Georgian style that is still beautifully intact today.
Their home at Anmer Hall is just a short drive away and is a convenient day out when they’re not fancying a trip to the beach. The couple have been shopping there on a couple of occasions, including popping into the town’s historic independent department store, Bakers and Larners, that has been at the heart of the town since 1770.
Before the arrival of their Children, the Duchess was often spotted on the high street, catching up with friends or even looking around some of the local antique shops.
But for anyone who’s visited the quintessential market town, it will come as no surprise. Nigel Hadlow, lead for Visit Holt and the Holt Sunday Market Team, said that Holt’s success comes down to a “rare mix of independent spirit, community collaboration, and careful curation.
“The town has a timeless charm, but it’s not stuck in the past – it’s constantly evolving in thoughtful, creative ways that keep people coming back.
“It’s this mix of quality, personality, and experience that makes Holt stand out – and why so many visitors return time and again.”
