The UK city named the most beautiful to visit to autumn | Travel News | Travel

You don’t have to travel across the world for a beautiful autumn getaway. In fact, one of the most popular destinations for a holiday in the shoulder season is right here in the UK.

While London and Bath are popular options for staycations, the top city for a holiday has been revealed as Scotland’s capital of Edinburgh.  According to new research from London North England Railway (LNER) this beautiful city boasts the best autumn landscapes in the country. The research analysed historical climate records, local tree species, and photo evidence to estimate when leaves reach their most vibrant shades.

Each location was also given an “Autumn Beauty” score based on the richness and consistency of its reds, oranges, and yellows.

Edinburgh received an almost perfect score of 92/100.

The experts said: “Edinburgh’s cobbled streets and dramatic skyline are even more magical under a canopy of autumn colour.

The Meadows and Princes Street Gardens burst into reds and golds, while Holyrood Park offers walking trails up Arthur’s Seat with sweeping views. Calton Hill, right in the city centre, adds another layer to autumn, with amber trees framing iconic vistas over the Old Town and beyond.

“With its mix of history, open space and easy travel connections, Edinburgh is the ideal city break for crisp, colourful days.”

As well as being beautiful, Edinburgh has plenty to entertain tourists. One unmissable experience is exploring the castle which looms large on a hill above the city.

Although it can be very busy, the castle is rich in history. You can view the old prisons as well as the Honours of Scotland – the oldest crown jewels in Britain.

It also boasts stunning views across the city, right the way to the sea – perfect for pictures on a crisp autumn day.

The Royal Mile leading up to the castle is full of charming shops, pubs and cafes – perfect for a peaceful mooch and browse. If you fancy splurging on a meal, then The Witchery is the perfect place. Nestled beneath the hotel of the same name, this dark and intimate restaurant has an extensive menu where local produce is the star.

While it is pricey, the quality and service are well worth it if you fancy a treat.

One of the places that few tourists in Edinburgh travel to is its seaside. Although autumn isn’t the best for sunbathing, it’s perfect for a bracing stroll across the sand and down the Victorian prom at Portobello Beach.

It’s also packed with independent shops and great for some window shopping. As it’s further from the city centre, it’s far less crowded and gives a great opportunity to get away from the hordes of people exploring the inner city.
