The tiny Mediterranean holiday town nicknamed ‘the Bali of Europe’ | Europe | Travel

While tourists flock to Bali each year in their millions to enjoy its white sandy beaches and stunning natural beauty, those looking to stay a little closer to home will be pleased to learn there is actually a European alternative just a short distance from the UK. A beach town in the south of Spain – the most southerly town in mainland Europe – could very well trick you into believing you are 8,000 miles away.

Tarifa is actually only nine miles from the north of Africa and is often called the “Bali of Europe” thanks to its impressive sandy beaches. It is often also dubbed the kite surfing capital of Europe due to the strong winds that make it a popular sport there. According to travel influencer, Travel with Rafa, Tarifa “feels like a tropical paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean. It feels like the Bali of Europe!”

Tarifa lies in the province of Cadiz, Andalusia, on the Costa de la Luz (“coast of light”) and across the Strait of Gibraltar facing Morocco. The only parts of Europe farther south than are islands, including the Greek island of Gavdos. In fact, the North African capitals of Algiers and Tunis actually lie farther north than Tarifa.

Playa de Bologna beach is one of the popular beaches, while Playa de Los Lances is where you will find the most wind sports. At Waikiki beach bar, you will find that ultimate Bali-like experience, with thatched umberellas. Aloha Bar, meanwhile, has cocktails on offer for just €3 (£2.50).

There is plenty to see beyond just beaches, however. Key landmarks include the well-preserved Guzmán castle, near the port, which was built by order of caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III in 960. Also be sure to visit the remains of the medieval walls, where only one of three gates exist today, the Puerta de Jerez from the 13th century.

The Old Town is home to mouthwatering tapas bars and local shops, as well as nightclubs. This is where tourists and locals tend to congregate.

Tarifa is located within the Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve, a renowned place to watch migrating birds. Storks can often be watched crossing the Strait in spring and autumn, while whale and dolpin watching can be done, with species including the common dolphin, sperm whale and orca.

Brits looking to experience Tarifa from themselves can fly from Luton Airport to Malaga (AGP) for just £61 one way with Ryanair in early July, according to Skyscanner. There is then a direct bus from Malaga Airport to Algeciras, leaving every half an hour, until 9pm local time. From Gibraltar, there is a bus from La Linea bus station – a five-minute walk from the airport – to Algeciras.
