The tiny but pretty European island loved by A-listers and overlooked by tourists

Greece is gorgeous – there’s no two ways about it. That’s why the country and its stunning islands remain an absolute favourite with Brits.

But there is still a little corner of Greece that’s often overlooked by tourists…which is perhaps why it’s favoured by the rich and famous.

The tiny little island of Patmos has many celebrity fans – from supermodels such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell to Hollywood stars such as Richard Gere and Pierce Brosnan.

So what makes the diddly Greek island worth visiting other than its army of A-list fans? Well, there’s plenty.

Patmos, which is in the Aegean Sea, is famous as the location where John of Patmos received the visions found in the Book of Revelation of the New Testament. It is also where the book was written.

Patmos has a population of just 2,998 and an area of around 13 square miles.

It is most famous for its Monastery of St. John – a massive stone monastery completed in the 11th century in honour of St. John the Apostle.

But as well as an abundance of history and culture tourists can also enjoy themselves at its many highly-rated restaurants and bars.

In the evenings the main port of Skala is the place to be with an array of seafood and souvlaki restaurants, cute little boutiques and cocktail bars.

Travel bloggers are certainly impressed – including theviennesegirl.com.

“It’s the ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing retreat in a peaceful and tranquil setting.”

Recent tourists who’ve made the trip have also shared their experiences on travel review site Tripadvisor.

One visitor to its famed monastery said: “Profound. Extraordinary. Thought-provoking. Heart-wrenching. Sacred. Yet…ACCESSIBLE.

“And I am grateful. Having travelled from the United States, and actually staying on the island, I was in complete awe of this global treasure of humankind.”

Another said: “This monastery is on a grand scale and it dominates the local area. It is a striking building and its beauty matches its size.”
