There’s nothing quite as frustrating as landing at your eagerly awaited holiday destination only to realise that the airport is miles away from the city centre.

Many travellers have experienced the surprise of a long, costly transfer, and sometimes the distance between the airport and the city is downright shocking.

Take Paris-Vatry, for example – it’s located a full 160km from the City of Lights.

The same goes for Munich West, which sits 120km away from the Bavarian capital, or Frankfurt Hahn, 125km from Frankfurt and actually much closer to Luxembourg!

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck on a two-hour bus ride, you’ll know just how important it is to choose a city with an airport that’s right on your doorstep.

Luckily, Europe is home to some cities where the airport is so close to the city centre, you’ll barely have time to catch your breath before you’re sipping your first drink in town.

Gibraltar Airport takes the crown as the closest airport to a city centre, sitting just 1.4km away from the iconic Moorish Castle and Market Place.

The transfer time? A mere five minutes on a bus for under €2, or you can stretch your legs with a 15-minute walk – which even involves crossing the runway. A walk on the tarmac, anyone?

In Pisa, you’ll be able to reach the historic centre in no time, with the airport sitting just 1.5km from the central railway station. If you’re planning to visit the famous Leaning Tower, it’s just a short 3km from the airport, making it a quick and easy journey.

The people-mover shuttle service can get you to the train station in around five minutes for only €6.50, so you won’t be wasting any time.

If you’re heading to Tallinn, you’re in for a treat. With Tallinn Airport located just 4km from the city centre, it’s an easy 15-minute transfer by bus or tram, and at only €2, it’s a bargain.

It’s a great way to start your visit to Estonia’s charming capital, where medieval architecture meets modern flair.

Vilnius is another hidden gem, with the airport located just 5.9km from the heart of the city. Direct buses depart every 10 minutes, and at just €0.65, you can easily hop on and be in the city in no time.

Lisbon, though 10km from the city centre, also offers excellent transport options. The Aeroporto-Saldanha rail line will get you into the historic centre in under 20 minutes for just a few euros, making your transfer hassle-free.

Flying into Malaga? The airport has a train station just outside the terminal, and with the C-1 line, you can reach the city centre in a swift 12 minutes for an affordable price.

From there, you can easily hop on a train to the popular resort towns of Fuengirola, Benalmadena, and Torremolinos.

For those flying into Zurich, you’ll be in the city in just 10 minutes by train, with the S2 or S16 lines whisking you straight to the main station.

Copenhagen is just as efficient, with a direct 13-minute train ride from the airport to Central Station, costing under €5.

With many European cities offering affordable and efficient public transport options, there’s no need to splurge on a taxi or rideshare when you land.

Embracing public transport not only saves you money, but it’s also a much greener way to travel.

More and more cities are improving their transport networks to make it easier for travellers to get to their destination quickly and sustainably.

So, next time you’re booking your flight, consider opting for a city with a conveniently located airport – it’ll make your trip that much easier and more enjoyable.
