A 2021 thriller with a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes has been described as “terrific” and is available to watch on Netflix.

Pig is an American drama film written and directed by Michael Sarnoski based on a story by Vanessa Block and Sarnoski.

The film’s synopsis reads: “A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.”

Nicolas Cage stars in the movie alongside Alex Wolff, Adam Arkin, Nina Belforte and David Knell.

Pig has received an impressive 97% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

One audience reviewer described the film as “terrific” and added that it was a “beautifully filmed metaphor for what has value in our lives”.

The critics consensus reads: “Like the animal itself, Pig defies the hogwash of expectations with a beautiful odyssey of loss and love anchored by Nicolas Cage’s affectingly raw performance.”

“I missed seeing Pig on its original release, and that was my mistake. Do not make the same one. This is vital, unmissable cinema,” one critic said.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a score of four out of four stars, writing: “The unpredictable Cage delivers some of his best work in years.”

While Richard Whittaker of The Austin Chronicle awarded the film four-and-a-half out of five stars and said: “At a time when so many people are struggling to find something of value in their lives, when people are fleeing jobs, cities, futures they thought they wanted, Cage has crafted a quiet soliloquy about grasping onto something that has meaning.”

With the audience rating sitting at 83% the audience are not quite as convinced as the critics.

The audience consensus states: “Slow and strange but well-written and acted, Pig has some profound messages about life for viewers willing to settle in for the ride.”

Pig is available to stream on Netflix right now.
