The sweet birthday tradition Princess Kate's family share that Prince William may recreate

The Princess of Wales has some sweet traditions that she recreates every year for her children’s birthdays. Like many parents, Kate personally makes her children’s birthday cakes and has said that she stays up late the night before to finish them.

With her 42nd birthday coming up tomorrow, January 9, people are wondering if Prince William will be following suit, staying up to make a cake for his wife.

During an appearance on Dame Mary Berry’s Christmas special A Berry Royal Christmas, Kate said: “I love making the cake. It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it.”

Prince William has joked about his lack of cooking skills but has said it is something he is keen to get better at.

And the Princess of Wales revealed that he is good at certain things, such as breakfasts and spaghetti bolognese.

She said: “He did cook for me quite a bit at university, and he would always come with a bit of angst and a bit of anger if something had gone wrong and I would have to wander in and save something that was going.”

Another birthday tradition Kate has is taking her children’s official pictures, rather than the traditional photocall.

But she has said before that her children are not always pleased she always has a camera in her hand, saying: “Everyone’s like, ‘Mummy, please stop taking photographs!'”

The Princess even took Queen Camilla’s official portraits for her 75th birthday, which appeared in an edition of Country Life magazine which she guest-edited.

When Camilla was asked about her preference for photographers, the magazine’s editor Mark Hedges was left puzzled.

He revealed: “She immediately said, ‘Catherine.’ And none of us could think who she meant. And then some light bulbs started going on.”
