A tiny village placed right on the border of England and Wales offers stunning limestone cliffs, river views, and outdoor activities. Symonds Yat is among the most iconic and beautiful locations in the Dean Wye.
Straddling the border between Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, the village is a favourite spot for hikers, kayakers, and nature lovers. There are three distinct parts: Yat Rock, a viewpoint with incredible views over the River Wye, and the villages of Symonds Yat East and Symonds Yat West on either side of the river. The only way from one side to the other is a long drive or a passenger ferry.
Symonds Yat Rock is a famous viewpoint offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Wye Valley. The area is extremely popular for birdwatching, especially for spotting peregrine falcons.
A visitor who has been to the village wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “Symonds Yatt has to be one of the most stunning viewpoints I have ever visited. It is located on the border of England & Wales and boasts beautiful views as far as the eye can see.
“The viewing point overlooks many miles of glorious British countryside and ranges from rural farmland to untouched forest. One can see a range of wildlife from sheep, cattle, deer and birds of prey.
“The Yatt is about 4 miles from the Forest Holidays Forest of Dean location and is well signposted. It was a really nice walk & great to experience this with the family. This is one however for nice days & to be avoided in the rain. A free trip and well worth the visit.”
River Wye & Symonds Yat Rapids is an ideal destination for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Gentle rapids provide fun challenges for beginners and experienced paddlers.
Tourists can also take a moment to enjoy the Hand-Pulled Ferry which is a historic ferry crossing the River Wye, operated by pulling a rope.
Apart from being a natural treat, the village is also home to several pubs and restaurants. Symonds Yat is known for traditional country pubs with riverside views.
Among the most popular choices include The Saracens Head Inn and Ye Old Ferrie Inn.

“The choice of walks, clearly explained on the notice board and signposted clearly all the way round, provide great choices for most people. A special mention for the cafe which has fabulous coffee, cakes and sandwiches. A place to create memories.”
