The stunning Greek island that’s nowhere near as crowded as Santorini | World | News

Those dreaming of a Greek getaway that ticks all the boxes for a sun-drenched getaway should look no further than this magical spot that’s been deemed a “hidden paradise” and boasts of far less tourists compared to the likes of Crete, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini.

The region consists of two small islands individually known as Kato (lower) Koufonissi and Ano (upper) Koufonissia with a population of only 336 to 391 residents, making it far less crowded than many other popular Greek spots. The Koufonisia islands belong to the East Cyclades archipelago and are such a dreamy spot it’s where foreign tourists and even the Greeks themselves holiday at.

And with the island’s laid back atmosphere, pristine beaches, natural pools and overall exotic ambiance felt throughout here, it’s easy to see why. In fact, Koufonisia is renowned for its beaches and natural pools which have been sculpted in the rocks with inviting turquoise waters that shimmer in the sun beckoning all for a cheeky dip.

Koufonisia’s daytime temperatures in April usually reach up to 19C with the islands providing ideal opportunities for hiking, with temperatures soaring even higher to a dreamy 23C in May.

Along these epic hikes, visitors can discover all the natural delights the islands have to offer as they are rather small with all distances easily covered on foot.

When it comes to beaches, Koufonisia is home to a number of stunning ones including the sandy beaches at Foinikas Beach, Fanos Beach and Ammos Beach, to name a few.

However it’s Koufonisia’s rock pools that has really put these islands on the map providing one of the most unique swimming spots in the world.

These rock pools are formed by the primeval power of the sea with the ocean’s waves gradually eating away at the tufa rocks. The pool boasts of turquoise-hued waters seamlessly connected to the sea via a narrow underwater passage.

At the centre of these islands you will find the Chora of Koufonisi offering that typical Cycladic village feel with whitewashed buildings scattered here and there. Along its picturesque streets you will find a grand white windmill and a quaint church which is dedicated to St. George – the patron saint of Koufonisia.

As for ways to fill your sunny days here in Koufonisia, the options are endless and includes sunbathing, swimming, sailing, snorkelling, diving and exhilarating day trips to one of the nearby islands/

Sampling the island’s fresh seafood comes highly recommended to anyone visiting Koufonisia found on the island’s many tavernas and restaurants and while Koufonisia is known for a more low-key nightlife scene than other Greek islands, there are still plenty of bars in Chora to suit all tastes.

One review on TripAdvisor wrote: “Here are the types of beaches here you think of when you think of Greek beaches.

“Beautiful clear water, restaurants with facilities that are close if needed and an amazing harbour.”
