The capital of Estonia is one of the world’s most walkable cities, according to research from InsiderMonkey.
Tallinn is a beautiful, atmospheric city in Estonia’s north, located on the edge of the Baltic Sea.
Part of the reason it’s so easy to get around on foot is that it’s one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.
In particular, its 13th-century Old Town declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, is wonderfully designed for walkers.
The Old Town sprawls from the city centre, where cute winding streets meet hidden courtyards and grand wooden doors open out into galleries and workshops.
The Old Town itself is made up of two distinct areas: the Toompea or Upper Town, home to the Estonian government.
And the Lower Town, Vanalinn, is a more lively place for those seeking bustling nightlife.
According to the report, Tallinn’s “compact layout” makes “walking on foot ideal.”
The city is only 61.5 sq miles. In comparison, Greater London is 607 sq miles, while Edinburgh—also ranked one of the most walkable cities in the world—is 102 sq miles.
The report’s entry for Tallinn finished: “Tallinn requires a walking time of 46 minutes to travel between its top five destinations by foot. The walking experience in Tallinn takes you through a rich mix of tradition and culture.
“The most sought-after destinations of the city include Freedom Square, Tallinn Town Hall, and Viru Gate.”
