The Salt Path release date, cast and trailer as inspirational true story hits cinemas

Cinema-goers are in for a treat as “The Salt Path”, the poignant biographical drama based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir, is set to hit the big screen. The film chronicles the true story of a couple who find themselves without a home following legal woes and a devastating health diagnosis.

The narrative takes the audience on a journey along the 630-mile South West Coast Path, England’s longest unbroken walkway, stretching from Minehead to Poole and winding through Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset.

Raynor Winn’s spouse was diagnosed with corticobasal degeneration (CBD), an uncommon and progressive neurological condition. The couple’s descent into homelessness came after a business venture with a friend soured.

Their decision to traverse the South West Coast Path proved transformative, with both Raynor and her husband Moth describing the trek as “life-changing”.

In a conversation with Saturday Morning, Raynor recounted, “It just seemed like the most obvious thing to do – pack a rucksack and go for a walk – so that’s what we did,” adding, “The idea of following a line on a map seemed like something that would draw us forward. It would take us into the next day. It would give us a reason and a purpose. That’s what we clung on to.”

For those eager to learn more about the film, here’s the essential information.

When is The Salt Path out?

After its debut at the Special Presentations section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, “The Salt Path” is slated for release across UK cinemas on May 30, promising a cinematic experience not to be missed.

Who stars in The Salt Path?

The upcoming film boasts a talented cast, including Gillian Anderson of Sex Education and The Fall fame, who takes on the role of Raynor Winn. Her on-screen husband, Moth, is portrayed by Jason Isaacs, recognised for his notable roles in the Harry Potter film franchise and The White Lotus.

James Lance, familiar to audiences from Ted Lasso, stars as Grant, a character the couple encounters on their journey, offering them friendship and temporary accommodation at his farmhouse. Hermione Norris, known for her role in Cold Feet, plays Polly, a long-time friend of Raynor’s, who provides shelter and assistance in finding employment.

Is there a trailer for The Salt Path?

A trailer for The Salt Path was unveiled at the beginning of 2025, showcasing the numerous challenges the couple faces as they embark on an arduous journey, resorting to illegal camping along the way. Despite being warned of the “long old hike” ahead, they’re resolute in the face of adversity, having lost their livelihoods.

The trailer highlights the couple’s struggles against the elements, but also reveals the profound impact of their experiences. As they learn to appreciate the breathtaking scenery, they’re told they’ll “never be the same again”. In one poignant moment, Moth wrestles with a wayward tent, declaring, “I’m not leaving the tent, it’s where we live.”

Raynor reflects, “Walking gives us time to think,” as the pair comes to realise that their sense of identity was never tied to the home they once owned.

The Salt Path will be released in cinemas on May 30
