The sad legacy of Chuck Norris’ early SoCal martial arts studios

Legendary late martial artist and action star Chuck Norris had deep roots in Los Angeles — where he opened the first of many karate studios across the city and surrounding suburbs.

But the iconic film and TV star, who tragically died this week at 86, wouldn’t have recognized the current site of his very first dojo in Torrance.

In 1960, he opened Chuck Norris Karate Studios at the corner of Hawthorne and 226th Street before eventually expanding to Redondo Beach, Sherman Oaks, Lakewood and Grenada Hills, according to the Daily Breeze.

Today, a bland apartment complex surrounded by construction fencing has sprouted at the same intersection, with a sign advertising “Next Level Living.”

The Gable House Apartments will feature 218 “luxury apartment homes” and 12,000 square feet of retail, including dining and shopping, according to its website. Leasing of the apartments was anticipated to begin early 2026.

The apartment wasn’t the first thing to replace Norris’ studio. A mattress store formerly stood at the address, according to a 2021 YouTube video.

The Post contacted the Gable House Apartments for comment.

Born in Oklahoma, Norris’ family moved to Gardena when he was 12 before settling in Torrance, where attended North High School, the Daily Breeze reported.

After graduating in 1958, he enlisted in the US Air Force and went to Korea, where he developed an interest in martial arts that lead to a lifetime mastering the craft.

Norris was discharged from the Air Force in 1962 and returned to the South bay, applying to be a police officer in Torrance. When he didn’t hear back, he decided to open the karate studio.

By 1970, his chain had expanded to six locations.

He would eventually move to nearby Rolling Hills Estates and then to Orange County in 1986.

One of his karate clients was Hollywood icon Steve McQueen, who nudged Norris to try acting.
