While crowds descend on London’s Winter Wonderland, one charming North Yorkshire seaside town transforms into a dreamland of its own.

Its cobbled streets are draped with twinkling lights so you can wander with a mulled wine while escaping the thousands visiting the larger cities.

Whitby at Christmas is something to behold, and here are some of the best activities for the festive period.

Made in Whitby Christmas Festival

Live music will fill the grounds at Whitby Brewery’s Christmas makers market, which overlooks Whitby Abbey, on December 14 and 15 from 11:00am until 9.00pm.

It promises to transport you to the world of Dickens, where you’ll be surrounded by glowing oil lamps and the smell of roasted chestnuts.

Festive afternoon tea

Treat yourself to a festive afternoon tea in one of Whitby’s cosy cafes or tearooms, like Hetty and Betty, which is hosting a Christmas-themed spread and a festive quiz on 27 December at 2.45pm.

Christmas Carols and Services

Whitby has several beautiful churches which hold Christmas Eve or Christmas Day services, but many also host carol services in the days before to get you into the festive spirit.

Do some Christmas shopping

Go treasure-hunting for last-minute presents at one of Whitby’s many quirky boutiques, galleries, or antique shops.

You should also make sure you stop for a mince pie and hot chocolate at one of the charming cafés, like Sherlock’s Coffee Shop.
