A coastal city famed for its medieval basilica, a palm-lined waterfront and Roman warships has become the must-visit spot this summer. The stunning Italian city is also home to pristine white sandy beaches, dramatic hilltops and a host of charming cafes and boutiques found dotted throughout its central squares. It’s been described as a culture enthusiasts dream thanks to its many archaeological landmarks, while also providing the perfect spot to wine and dine boasting of many authentic eateries and wine bars found here.

Best of all, it will soon be a cinch to travel to as British Airways are set to launch a new flight route just in time for summer, allowing for an easy Sardinian getaway you’ll remember for years. Olbia is often overlooked for its more popular neighbour of Costa Smeralda, but with an impressive historic centre and an array of eateries and boutiques, the city has been described as being an affordable and authentic alternative to many other resorts that stretch to the north and south.

The stunning Italian island of Olbia is a city and commune that’s home to only roughly 60,346 inhabitants.

Located in the Italian insular province of Sassari in northeastern Sardinia, Italy, experiencing this slice of coastal magic just got that much easier.

That’s because as of May 25, BA will offer weekly services to Olbia, travelling between London City and Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, making it easier than ever for Brits to visit the beautiful Italian island.

Initially, these BA flights will be weekly but will later increase to twice weekly by July 16 scheduled for Wednesdays and Sundays, allowing passengers even more options when it comes to experiencing this charming Italian island.

Visitors here can soak up the old town’s array of quirky and interesting buildings, including old churches and super elegant houses.

History buffs will be in their element as the Archaeological Museum which focuses on the Greek, Phoenician, Punic, Roman, medieval, modern and contemporary eras.

There’s even a ferris wheel which lines up splendid panoramic views of this seaside city to enjoy.

As for the beaches, idyllic spots are found at Pittulongu, the main beach, Porto Istana Beach which is popular among swimmers and sunbathers, with countless others providing all the relaxation surrounded by crystal-clear waters.

There’s an ancient castle just waiting to be explored that overlooks the expansive sea and known as Pedres Castle with a Romanesque church known as  Basilica di San Simplicio coming in highly recommended thanks to its impressive artwork and architecture.

A unique multicoloured tiled dome, known as Chiesa di San Paolo Apostolo, is one to be admired and is a striking feature of Olbia’s skyline.

Taking a break from the endless archeological wonders, Olbia’s many tempting eateries will undoubtedly send you to an Italian food heaven with fresh seafood on offer, particularly for mussels from the Gulf of Olbia and Zuppa Gallurese coming in highly recommended with features a rustic bread and cheese soup.

One review on TripAdvisor wrote of Olbia and said: “Beautiful spot with crystal clear waters and white sand beaches that are very clean and on a splendid landscape.”
